When trying to lose weight or eat healthier, the personal responsibility is to avoid eating sugar and other unhealthy foods by staying away from fast food restaurants, but what people do not know is that half of all the sugar that is eaten comes from foods that you do not know contain sugar in them (“How The Food Industry”). For example, a wheat hamburger bun from Rudi’s Organic Bakery contains four grams of sugar (“Calories In Rudi’s”). Meat, salad dressings, and even fruit are also examples of products that perhaps you did not know contained sugar in them. The food industry has done a very good job incorporating chemicals and fats into food products in order for them to satisfy our taste buds. This is helping them because what they seek is profits. In other words, they want money; and that is exactly what they are getting. It is not fair that the food industry is creating this epidemic and still getting what they strive for. They are doing whatever it takes in order for consumers to keep buying processed foods so that they get their earnings.
Advertisements Also, there are many advertisements that advertise fast food restaurants and not healthy foods. From personal experience, when I watch Nickelodeon, I see at least three commercials that advertise fast food in every break. For instance, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, KFC, Taco Bell, and many more fast food restaurants are being advertised daily in a great variety and take over the screen for almost a minute. These commercials show skinny adults, children and teenagers enjoying their meals and having a great time. These advertisements are being targeted at this group of people. They describe the food as ‘delicious’ and make it look delectable, but when I go to McDonalds and order a hamburger, it does not look the same. The hamburger that captures my attention on the television looks fresh, juicy, mouthwatering, and neatly wrapped; the hamburger that I receive is not fresh or mouthwatering. It is very noticeable that the workers at McDonald’s prepared this product in a small amount of time. They are selling me a product that does not contain what they advertise. Also, they are portraying the idea that by adding apples to a happy meal, it becomes a healthy balance. By seeing a fruit in a meal, people come to the conclusion that this product is now good for them and will not harm them. Therefore, they buy it for their small children. The food industry might think that if you do not want to gain weight, then do not bother eating at their restaurants, but if they added healthy food choices to their menu or fresh ingredients that have not been processed, it would be a different story.
